I just finished reading The Great Gatsby last night in order to see the movie at the end of this week (also on my birthday!) and I’m wondering if anyone else has read it, and if so, what is your interpretation of the last line?
“So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” ~F. Scott Fitzgerald The Great Gatsby
I have read it, but I am not a fan, although I can’t wait to see the movie. My interpretation of this line is that we persist and we fight againt all odds, and even against our own fate (the currents),yet the past always takes its toll on us. Or at least that’s how I see it.
That’s a really great interpretation. I like it! Why didn’t you like the book?
